Job Summary:
Seeking an experienced Server Engineer/Administrator to join our
team responsible for building, managing, and troubleshooting a
large-scale enterprise server environment, primarily focused on
Windows Server with opportunities to support Linux systems. The
ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in Windows
Server operating systems, virtualization (especially VMware), and
experience working within structured ITSM processes in environments
supporting thousands of servers. This role requires strong
troubleshooting skills, meticulous adherence to complex procedures,
and excellent technical documentation habits. Demonstrates strong
active listening skills and collaborates effectively by considering
alternative ideas to reach optimal solutions.
Core Responsibilities:
Server Build & Configuration: Deploy, configure, and manage Windows
Server operating systems (e.g., Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022,
2025) at scale, following standardized build processes and
procedures. Optionally perform similar tasks for enterprise Linux
distributions (e.g., RHEL).
Troubleshooting & Incident Management: Diagnose and resolve complex
operating system-level issues, performance bottlenecks, and system
failures on Windows Servers (and potentially Linux). Respond to,
manage, and resolve incidents assigned via the ITSM ticketing
system within defined Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Virtualization Management: Provision, manage, and troubleshoot
virtual machines within a large VMware vSphere environment
(vCenter, ESXi).
Process Adherence & Documentation: Strictly follow complex
technical procedures for server builds, changes, and
decommissioning. Create and maintain comprehensive technical
documentation for server configurations, processes, and
troubleshooting guides. Maintain accurate and detailed records
within the ITSM ticketing system.
Lifecycle Management: Participate in the planning and execution of
server hardware and software lifecycle management, including
patching, upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning.
Enterprise Tool Utilization: Utilize enterprise-class tools for
server provisioning, monitoring, configuration management, patching
(e.g., BigFix/SCCM, SCOM/Netcool/ScienceLogic), and backups IBM
TSM, Cohesity.
Collaboration: Work closely with other infrastructure teams
(Networking, Storage, Security), agency application owners, and
project managers.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Experience: 5+ years of experience administering server operating
systems in a large enterprise environment (1000+ servers).
Windows Server Expertise: In-depth knowledge and hands-on
experience with Microsoft Windows Server operating systems,
including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy Objects (GPOs),
IIS, and security hardening.
Troubleshooting: Proven ability to perform root cause analysis and
resolve complex OS-level problems efficiently. Experience using
performance monitoring tools and analyzing system logs.
Virtualization: Strong practical experience with VMware vSphere
(ESXi, vCenter) including VM provisioning, resource management,
vMotion, and basic troubleshooting.
ITSM & Process Orientation: Demonstrable experience working within
an IT Service Management (ITSM) framework (e.g., ITIL principles)
and using enterprise ticketing systems (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira
Service Management, BMC Remedy). Proven ability to follow complex
documented procedures accurately.
Enterprise Environment: Understanding of the challenges and
requirements of managing infrastructure at scale, including change
management, configuration management, and standardization.
Documentation: Excellent technical writing skills with experience
creating and maintaining system documentation and knowledge base
articles. Meticulous record-keeping within ticketing systems.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
Linux Administration: Experience administering enterprise Linux
distributions (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu).
Scripting/Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages such as
PowerShell, Bash, or Python for task automation.
Configuration Management Tools: Experience with tools like Ansible,
Puppet, Chef, or SCCM for configuration management and
orchestration.
Cloud Platforms: Familiarity or experience with public cloud
platforms (Azure, AWS) and hybrid cloud concepts.
Storage & Networking: Foundational understanding of enterprise
storage concepts (SAN, NAS) and networking principles (TCP/IP,
VLANs, Firewalls, Load Balancers).
Certifications: Relevant industry certifications such as MCSE,
MCSA, VCP-DCV, Linux+, ITIL Foundation.
